Iberia About

Iberia was founded on June 28, 1927, as Spain's flag carrier airline. Based in Madrid, the company's main hub is Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport, with secondary hubs at Barcelona–El Prat and London Heathrow airports. A member of the Oneworld alliance, Iberia is a full-service airline. However, it also operates a hybrid business model with its low-cost subsidiary, Iberia Express. Iberia's fleet consists of a total of 162 aircraft, with major types including the Airbus A320 family, A330, and A350. The airline serves over 140 cities worldwide, flying to Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Iberia operated domestic flights during the Spanish Civil War and launched its first international flight to Lisbon in 1939. It expanded across Europe in the 1940s, was nationalized in 1944, and was privatized in 2001, joining the International Airlines Group (IAG). As a pioneer in Spanish aviation, Iberia also offers cargo, catering, and airport services. Historically, it is noted that Iberia carried 500 million passengers by 2002, and today, it serves millions of passengers with tens of thousands of employees. The airline is known for its high-quality service and extensive destination network.

Iberia - Destinations

Iberia has an extensive destination network, offering flights to over 140 cities worldwide. The company serves more than 109 destinations in 39 countries. Its main service areas include Europe, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Routes within Spain and major cities in Europe are particularly popular. Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport in Madrid serves as Iberia's main hub, while Barcelona–El Prat and London Heathrow are important secondary hubs. Among Iberia's most popular routes are cities like New York, Buenos Aires, and London from Madrid. Additionally, being a member of the oneworld alliance provides passengers with a wide transfer network worldwide. Thanks to this alliance, codeshare partnerships with major airlines like British Airways and American Airlines offer passengers more options and flexibility. Iberia also has some seasonal routes, with more flights to tourist destinations in the summer. This allows Iberia passengers to access a wide destination network for both business and leisure travel.

Iberia - Baggage Policy

Hand Luggage / Cabin Baggage: When traveling with Iberia, each passenger in Economy class can carry a cabin bag measuring 56x40x25 cm and weighing up to 10 kg. In Business class, this weight limit increases to 14 kg. Additionally, each passenger is allowed to carry a personal item (such as a handbag or backpack) that fits under the seat, measuring 30x40x15 cm. This arrangement aims to enhance your comfort in the cabin and provide easy access to your belongings. Checked Baggage: Iberia's checked baggage policy varies depending on the ticket class. No free baggage allowance is offered under the Economy Basic fare, and these passengers must purchase their baggage for an additional fee. Economy Optimal, Comfort, and Flex fares include one piece of 23 kg baggage (maximum total size of 158 cm), while Business class generally offers 1-2 pieces of 23 kg baggage for free. If you need extra baggage, you can choose one of the 15 kg, 23 kg, or 32 kg options in advance and purchase it online to avoid higher fees at the airport. Special Baggage: Iberia has specific regulations for special baggage such as sports equipment and musical instruments. Passengers wishing to carry sports equipment (skiing, golf, bicycle) should reserve these items in advance and pay a fee of approximately 50-150€. Musical instruments can be carried in the cabin and are free up to 14 kg in Business Class. Strollers can be carried free of charge in a collapsible form for children under 2 years old. Additionally, irregularly shaped baggage may incur additional fees on long-haul flights. These rules play an important role in ensuring a smooth journey.

Iberia - Check-in & Seat Selection

Check-in Options: When traveling with Iberia Airlines, online check-in service starts 24 hours before departure and continues until departure. You can easily complete this process through Iberia's official website or the Iberia mobile app. You can store your boarding pass as a QR code on your mobile device. At the airport, self-service kiosks and baggage drop-off points typically open 2-3 hours before the flight. Check-in at airport counters closes 60 minutes before departure for international flights and 45 minutes for domestic flights within Spain. If you need to obtain your boarding pass in written form, you can use the counters. Seat Selection: Iberia's seat selection policy varies depending on your ticket type. Seat selection is generally charged for basic fares, with prices ranging from 10 to 50 Euros. However, seat selection is free for flexible fares and business class tickets. Premium seats include emergency exit row seats with extra legroom, and additional fees for these seats range from 30 to 100 Euros. There is a limited opportunity for free seat selection during online check-in. For Business Class passengers, all seats are free, and early selection is advantageous.
